Welcome

I can still vividly recall my first days of Orientation and classes as an incoming first-year student to Michigan Tech. Having grown up in a Christian home, school and church, I had no idea what to expect on a secular campus. I remember seeking out a role in several Christian organizations, but for whatever reason, I never found my niche. There were plenty of organizations to choose from, both religious and not, and throughout the barrage of pamphlets and recruitment materials, I eventually settled into several campus organizations, none of them faith based.

I became deeply involved with the Michigan Tech Lode as an editor, but I was still seeking to get involved in Christian work. Upon God's leading and encouragement from several others, the idea of a Christian newspaper formed. To make a long story short, after almost a year of planning and recruiting, Cross Reference published its first three issues last semester, and is back this year ready to serve the campus community. This paper seeks to encourage and challenge believers and non-believers alike to openly discuss spiritual matters.

We openly admit to being one-sided in our presentation on many issues, in that we base our content on the viewpoint that "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." (II Timothy 3:16 KJV) According to the Bible, repenting of sins, believing on Jesus death and resurrection, and accepting Him into our lives is the only way to eternal life with God.

We realize, however, that it is difficult to have a discussion when only one side is presented. That is why we have allowed appropriately presented comments on each article and an open forum for any topic on our website, www.mtucrossreference.com. We are not attempting to force a way of life on anyone, just get the discussion going. I trust that those who already profess a belief in Christ will grow as a result of this paper, but that those who disagree will feel challenged by what they read.

Particularly for the first-year students who read this issue, we have packed this issue full of resources for growing your faith on this secular campus.

Unlike me when I was a freshman, I hope that you will consider actively joining one of the many Christian fellowships on campus - and perhaps Cross Reference too! College is perhaps the first time in your life when you are free to make your own decisions.  More than ever before, college is the time to make your beliefs your own and to grow closer to God. As you attempt to do so, please allow Cross Reference to play a role in your spiritual engagement.
