WOPP: Week of Partnered Prayer
The Weeks of Partnered Prayer (WOPP) were started several years ago by four members from a few of the Christian groups on campus. All four original members were leaders in their respective groups and believed in the power of prayer to have a profound impact on the life of Christians. Those four people had been working within their organizations to create a desire for prayer and had a passion to see the power of God flow though the lives of all Christians for the glory of our Lord. The idea to form a group centered around prayer came from a desire to share the importance of prayer with the other believers on campus. Originally, the group, which was later labeled the partnered prayer team, did not include an idea for anything as organized as WOPP, but was searching for it even though they did not realize it.
The first Week of Partnered Payer was part of a Campus America initiative called Year of Partnered Prayer. During the Year of Partnered Prayer, college students from campuses all over the country joined together to cover an entire year in 24/7 prayer for revival and transformation. Erika Johnson, a founding member of the Partnered Prayer Team, said she "was amazed at the response from Michigan Tech students. They stepped up and gave time to God in prayer.”
This first event was in the fall of 2005 and was in preparation for a long time. The members of the newly christened partnered prayer team worked hard to get all of the Christian groups on campus involved in the the new WOPP event. By the grace of God, that first event was a great success and fueled a desire on campus for the things of God, and it grew from that first event to be something that would be held several times annually.
WOPP has grown to be a dynamic part of the Christian presence on campus, and has since become affiliated with Inter-Christian Council, and includes contributing members from many in the Christian community. God has used this group and the attitude of prayer it has reinforced around campus to bring Him glory and change the lives of His children.
