“The reproductive system: fascinating evidence for design”

Thursday, March 26, 2009

Intelligent design or chance - that was the topic Saturday, March 21 at the Rozsa Center.  Campus Crusade for Christ sponsored a free presentation by Dr. Randy Guliuzza of the Institute for Creation Research (ICR) on The Reproductive System: Fascinating Evidence for Design.  Dr. Guliuzza is a Professional Engineer and a Doctor of Medicine, having degrees from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, the University of Minnesota, Harvard University, and the Moody Bible Institute.  Dr. Guliuzza served nine years in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps, followed by serving as a physician in the U.S. Air Force until retiring in 2008.

The two-part presentation focused first on an in-depth look at several aspects of both reproductive systems leading up to the fertilization of an egg.  Dr. Guliuzza looked at such topics as the creation of sperm in the male body and the protection of sperm from the male's immune system.  This section also covered the very involved path of the sperm leading to the fertilized egg, and intricacies that the sperm cell needs to be able to interact with an egg cell and vice-versa.

Dr. Guliuzza continued in the second section with the fertilized egg's development until birth.  He explained such phenomena as the amazing functions of the placenta and how a baby's hormones maintain pregnancy, control maternal metabolism, prime the mother for delivery, and initiate (while in the womb) and continue to facilitate (after birth) the mother's body for lactation.  Dr. Guliuzza exposed some of the many things which may lead to the death of the mother and baby unless everything aligns perfectly the first time.

Both segments were followed by a brief Q & A session.   When asked why he chose to talk about the intricacies of the human reproductive system as opposed to other intricate systems in the human body, such as the eye, Dr. Guliuzza answered that it was because the reproductive system is the means of proliferation of a species.  If complexities arise in the reproductive system, the species will not be able to carry on.  His point was that the reproductive system could not have evolved over time because there are so many intricate parts that must work together.

The evening ended with a time of fellowship in the Rozsa Center Lobby where there were free materials provided by ICR.  A worker at the Rozsa Center estimated an attendance of approximately 400 people.  This event was open to Michigan Tech students and faculty, as well as the public of the greater Keweenaw area.  If you missed this event and would like to know more about the topics discussed or the materials handed out, please contact any member of Campus Crusade.

Hey, just a suggestion on

Hey, just a suggestion on news style--put most important facts in the lead of the story (i.e. 400 people showed up) and the less-important facts lower (Dr. Guliuzza is a PE and a Dr. with degrees from blah, etc.) Try to avoid a chronological news story. Although this story was overall good, chronology usually makes for a boring news story. Most important stuff --> Least important stuff is how things should flow. Keep it up!

Thanks

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep it in mind for if/when I write again!
