Spring break is finally here — the long anticipated rest between weeks eight and nine of classes; a time for many to go home to relax, catch up on sleep and spend time with family. For many, it is a mission field, among the friends and family back home who don't yet know Jesus, which is often the most difficult spring break destination, though also the easiest to overlook. For scores of other Michigan Tech students, spring break is a time not to go home, but to go out into the world to serve.

Summer takes many different shapes for students — but no matter where they are, there is always a potential for ministry. Whether it be getting industry experience on a co-op, or explicit short-term ministry opportunities, or just hanging out around home, there will always be people who need Jesus.

To understand the good news about salvation through Jesus Christ, we must first understand some things about who God is, and who we are.  First, God created us for His glory (Isaiah 43:6-7).  This means that we exist to show His greatness in all we do by joyfully preferring and depending on His ways instead of our own.  Since we were created to glorify God, it is our responsibility as creatures to do so (I Corinthians 10:31).

Spring semester may be almost over, but unlike classes, ministry doesn't stop at semester breaks—it just takes different forms.  While most take their ministries to their homes or co-ops for the summer, many students will remain in Houghton for at least part of the summer, and several of the Christian groups will be continuing with Bible studies and fellowship opportunities. His House Christian Fellowship has already announced that they will continue to meet on Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

"It was rock'n'roll- icious," says Ben Jensen, following the Christian metal concert in the MUB commons this past Wednesday.   Matt Radue then added "It rocked me in all my parallel universes."  As you can tell, students had a lot of fun, despite the limited turnout.  I even saw an elderly woman walking past the show who got into the fun, doing her own little jig.  The show started with band "medic! medic!" out of Iron River, whose music I'd classify as noise experimental.  It was great—their improvised beats and rifts were quite amazing, partially reminding me of the band Mute Math.

As you may have heard, there is a Christian hard rock concert coming to the MUB commons this Wednesday at 7:30pm.  Black Pajent, a Christian band out of Wyoming, will be performing, with special guest Medic! Medic! (more information can be found at: http://myspace.com/blackpajentband).  There is a $5 cover fee at the door.

Scripture clearly demonstrates that God established the union between a man and his wife to be a metaphor of the relationship between God and His people - between Christ and His church. Paul states in his letter to the Ephesians: "'Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.' This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church." (Ephesians 5:31-32 ESV).

A "week of partnered prayer" is almost here - during the week before Easter (April 5-11), the Memorial Union Building's Red Metal rooms A & B are reserved for 24/7 prayer.  Anyone is welcome to use this facilitiy at any time, though students are encouraged to sign up for slots ahead of time to better facilitate continual prayer.  You can sign up at http://icc.students.mtu.edu/prayer.  Direct any questions to Jason Tillman, jdtillma@mtu.edu.

"What sort of news will I find here?", you may perhaps wonder. In a nutshell: the news section will consist of a factual reporting of current events. Specifically: our focus will be to report on issues that are of particular interest to Christians, especially topics that are perhaps not found in mainstream media. Examples of such topics include (but are not limited to) global Christian persecution, social injustice, relevant laws and court rulings, and especially local/regional news and events relating to Christians.
