“We’ve got to tell everybody, we’ve got to remind them how good it is. People have forgotten what life is all about; they have forgotten what it is to be alive. They need to be reminded, they need to be reminded about what they have and what they can lose. What I feel is the joy of life, the gift of life, the freedom of life, the wonderment of life.”

Several months ago I stumbled upon a sermon by John Piper on desiringgod.org.  The title of the sermon was “Total Abstinence and Church Membership.”, and focused sharply on the issue of alcohol.  His conclusion: “We engage…to seek God’s help in abstaining from all drugs, food, drink, and practices which bring unwarranted harm to the body or jeopardize our own or another’s faith.”

I can not stress enough how our behaviors and practices can jeopardize our own faith.  It has been a difficult struggle for me personally, to abandon my love affair with secular music.  And I pray that at some point in time, listening to artists whose music is not good for my soul will begin to literally make me feel sick.

"It was rock'n'roll- icious," says Ben Jensen, following the Christian metal concert in the MUB commons this past Wednesday.   Matt Radue then added "It rocked me in all my parallel universes."  As you can tell, students had a lot of fun, despite the limited turnout.  I even saw an elderly woman walking past the show who got into the fun, doing her own little jig.  The show started with band "medic! medic!" out of Iron River, whose music I'd classify as noise experimental.  It was great—their improvised beats and rifts were quite amazing, partially reminding me of the band Mute Math.

"The Stranger" was written by Albert Camus and originally published in the French language in 1942. It is a novel that brilliantly depicts the depressing story of a young French man named Mersault. Mersault lives in a French colony in Algeria, Africa. If you read the book, it is important to understand the time and place of Mersault's life, as this plays a central role in his story. Remember that numerous European countries occupied various parts of Africa for many years, as they tried to "right the ways" of the African people and show them "how they should really live"—aka: colonization. Mersault's story also centers on Arab culture. Remember Arab societies reflect the importance of honor. If a certain family was shamed, the only way to restore honor to that family is to kill a member of the other family. This results in family feuds that can last for generations.

When Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List was released in 1993 it opened to a warm reception both critically and commercially. However, whenever the film is discussed, this aspect is the last thing on the people's minds - and that is where the mastery of this work really lies. Drawing a stark polarity from the entertainment of E.T. or Jurassic Park, the film portrays the grave reality of the holocaust in black and white.

As the title suggests, I have “Gone Indie” this week. Normally it is not my musical style of choice, but I have really enjoyed listening to these two albums and I think that both are amazing. The two albums I will be reviewing are Fangs! by Falling Up and The Hazards of Love by The Decemberists.

Before Steve Martin did Cheaper By the Dozen 2 (sequel to the remake), before Martin Short did Santa Claus 3, and before Chevy Chase did Zoom, there was the Three Amigos. This classic farce tells the story of three Hollywood movie stars who learn that there's more to life than 100,000 pesos. Set in the early days of Hollywood, the plot is pretty straightforward: three silent film actors lose their acting jobs and need to get their lives back (as well as their clothing).

Christians throughout the centuries have thought for one reason or another that the end times were near, but Dr. David Jeremiah's book reveals connections between current events and biblical prophecy that cannot be denied. While only God knows the exact time of His return (Matthew 24:36-44), we are told to always be watchful and always be ready for the time of His return. "What in the World is Going On?" offers "ten prophetic clues you cannot afford to ignore."

Well, since this is the very first issue of our newspaper I thought I’d give a little introduction. My name is Devin Thurston, I’m a first year Mechanical Engineer and my hometown is Fairfax, VA. What brings a southerner up here you may ask? I have always loved the state of Michigan. Both of my parents grew up downstate and just about every summer, my family would travel downstate to visit family. While searching for colleges with an engineering degree, I stumbled on Michigan Tech and thus, here I am.
